Korean traditional instruments are classified into four categories: string, wind, percussion, and hyang-aek-hyang-ak. Some of the most famous traditional Korean instruments are:
Gayageum: It is a 12-stringed zither that was first introduced in Korea during the Goryeo dynasty. This instrument produces a unique and soothing sound, especially when played in the traditional mode (Jeong-ak).
Haegeum: It is a two-stringed fiddle that is played vertically. This instrument is typically used to play traditional Korean folk music (Min-ak).
Daegeum: It is a large bamboo flute that is played horizontally. The Daegeum produces a haunting sound and is used in traditional Korean music (Jeong-ak) as well as in Buddhist ceremonies.
Janggu: It is a traditional Korean drum that is shaped like an hourglass. This percussion instrument produces a wide range of sounds from deep bass to high-pitched tones. It is commonly used in traditional Korean music as well as in Korean dance performances.
Buk: It is a Korean barrel drum that is used in various traditional Korean musical genres such as Samul-nori and Pungmul.
Yanggeum: It is a small Korean dulcimer that is similar to the Japanese instrument known as a koto.
Sogeum: It is a Korean bamboo transverse flute that is commonly used to play folk music and shaman music.
These instruments have been passed down to the present through the hands of professional musicians and masters. They are considered to be an important part of Korean culture and are highly respected by the Korean people.
